From Mayfair Banquets to Boardroom Boxes

From Mayfair Banquets to Boardroom Boxes

City Canapé Company is new. The kitchen behind it is twenty-five years old.

A canapé box ordered online in three minutes does not look like it has much heritage behind it. That is rather the point — the ordering is deliberately simple. But the food comes out of Mayfair Catering, which has been feeding London for a quarter of a century, and that lineage shows up in places you would not necessarily think to look.

What twenty-five years actually buys you

Not nostalgia. Three practical things.

Food safety discipline that is boring and total. Temperature logs, allergen controls, traceable suppliers, documented processes. This is unglamorous and nobody puts it on a website, but it is the difference between a supplier who has fed thousands of formal events without incident and one who has not yet been tested. If your event is for clients or regulators, this is the part that should reassure you most.

Chefs who understand a single mouthful. A canapé is a harder technical problem than a plated course. You have one bite to deliver acid, salt, fat, texture and temperature, and it has to hold its shape in someone's fingers while they make conversation. That is a specific skill, learned over a lot of banquets.

Somewhere to go when the event gets bigger. Boxed canapés cover a great deal — office drinks, client receptions, boardroom lunches. They do not cover a three-hundred-person product launch with staff, mixologists and hot food. When you need that, Mayfair Catering does it, with the same kitchen standards and the same people. You do not have to start again with a new supplier and hope.

Why we built a separate brand for it

Because the way London books food changed, and the traditional catering model does not fit the way it changed.

The old process was a phone call, a written quote, a menu discussion, a site visit and an invoice. That works for a wedding planned in March for September. It does not work for an office manager who finds out on Tuesday that eight clients are coming in on Thursday, and who needs to see prices, choose food and be finished in ten minutes.

So City Canapé Company is built around that reality: order online, forty-eight hours' notice, chilled and ready to serve, delivered by cargo bike from a kitchen ten minutes away. Nothing is charged until we have confirmed we can make it properly. What we did not change is the kitchen.

The things that carried over, and the things that didn't

Carried over: seasonal British sourcing, hand-finishing every item, making to order rather than holding stock, and a preference for delicate food over food engineered to survive a journey.

Did not carry over: the quote-and-negotiate process, the minimum order that rules out small offices, and the assumption that catering requires staff on site. Cold delivered canapés with no staff are also zero-rated for VAT, which quietly makes them around seventeen per cent cheaper in effect than the same spend with a staffed caterer — a fact more people should know.

Reliability is the actual product

Here is the unromantic truth about corporate catering: the food matters, and the turning up matters more. An excellent canapé that arrives at 6.45pm for a 6pm reception is worth nothing. The reason to care that a supplier has twenty-five years behind them is not the recipes. It is that they have already solved the operational problems that a newer business is still discovering.

When your name is on the invitation, that is what you are buying.
